For the past two years at UBC, I have busted my fucking ass at school, making goddamn sure that I am taking all the courses required for my degree, and have been passing everything (just barely at times, but 51% is a pass). It may have taken me an extra year to do, but in April, I finished third year, and next year, my last year at school, I ( Read more... )

they really don't seem to be very organized!

I know! The woman said I wasn't the only one freaking out, that they've received tons of phone calls. And you can't blame students for freaking out about something like this! I swear, they try and cause us as much distress as possible.

At least you know you aren't the only one!! Hopefully that will make it easier to fix.

Dr. Ramey (the microbiology undergrad advisor) and I had wondered if they had made a mistake because I had done third year twice--once as a general science student, and then as a microbiology student. However, within that span of two years, I have completed all the lower level requirements and core upper level courses, so Dr. Ramey said that I certainly do qualify for being promoted. At least if there is a problem and I am truly not promoted, Dr. Ramey can back me up! It's nice to have the reassurance that I did everything right, that I jumped through every hoop!

School is a fucking nightmare, let me tell you!

Sounds like they don't know that they're doing.

That's UBC for you.

Typical UBC...but at least they had the courtesy to notify you personally in a timely manner (given the circumstances, I think a couple of hours is pretty good). The same can't be said for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences ( ... )

I agree, the email was sent in a timely manner--a couple of hours is perfectly reasonable. In fact, it was by chance that I discovered my year eligibility/registration date--I was logging onto SSC for something else, not to check my year promotion. However, it still gave me a fucking heart attack!

The woman I spoke to said that many other students were calling and freaking out too (understandably so--if you're expecting to be promoted to 4th year, which is a pretty big fucking deal, and you're not, you're going to freak out because your graduation is in jeopardy). So I wonder if they only realized the error after all these phone calls?

Wow, that's pretty fucking rude of the admin...

Why does UBC fuck students around so much?! Thank goodness microbiology has its own undergrad advisor (apparently, not all faculties do), and one who is helpful, at that. (In fact, Dr. Ramey even replied back to me with the info contained in the email.)

Ya I'm pretty pissed that they just sent a mass email saying "Please note June presentations have been rescheduled to Wednesday, June 30th. " as if it is simply a re-schedule and not admitting that they FUCKED UP and posted the wrong date (doing the presentations 2 weeks early is a huge fucking deal, and not to mention unfair, since the May SPEP students did theirs at the end of week 4). And it would have taken the admin 2 seconds to reply to my Vista post, but she's too arrogant to admit to her mistake and apologize. Very fucking professional.

Yeah, they could have at least said, "We erroneously posted the incorrect date for presentations; they are actually scheduled for June 30th." Re-scheduling my ass!

By "arrogant", do you mean "cunt"?

They do this every year.

If they do this every damn year, needlessly freaking out students, you'd think they would STOP DOING IT!

I've had so many barriers in trying to get my education, and I'm not even confident that I will graduate next year--I fear something will stop me.

Our mutual acquaintance, J, told me that UBC fucked her over and she was not promoted to 4th year when she should have been.

1. I don't know that they do this every year.
2. UBC has fucked me over before.
3. I've had so many set backs in my education, and I have a feeling that I won't graduate because something bad is going to happen, so understandably, I thought not being promoted was it. You have no idea how much graduating means to me. No one does.

Ahh, at least it's showing *something* for you. Mine doesn't even state if I'm eligible for next year or not o_O That being said, I have more than 78 attempted credits and I'm entering into 3rd year so... =/ I'm not quite sure what's happening there. I tried calling, but was on hold for 15+ minutes and had to get back to work. I also tried emailing them, but haven't gotten anything back yet! I just want to know if they're going to let me continue or not... I know they have that whole policy about not going over 78 attempted credits before officially entering 3rd year but still...

Hope they fix it for you soon!

I'd rather have it not showing anything and find out when I register/my year promotion a few days later than other people, than have the incorrect info stated! Third years register ~July 6th, so there is still plenty of time. As of now, I am incorrectly identified as a third year, so my registration time is July 6th. But I should be promoted to 4th year, thus my true registration is June 21st, so UBC better get off their lazy asses ad FIX IT! Of course they are dealing with the mess they caused 4th years first, before they deal with the true third years.

What is your major? Have you made sure that you met all the requirements for promotion in your major?

I'm in the General Science Program (doing Life Sciences, primarily, with some EOSC that doesn't require much prereqs beyond basic first year classes).

The only lower-level requirement that I'm missing is 3 credits of stats, I was planning on taking BIOL 300 (needs 3rd year standing) rather than STAT 200. Other than those missing credits, the only thing that I can see hindering me is the 'more than 78 credits' bit... But I emailed both science advising (the general email) and the advisor for the General Science program. Hopefully someone comes back with 'oh, we just haven't gotten around to promoting you yet!' rather than 'you fail at life, go away'.

Well, not having that lower level requirement and exceeding the number of credits sound like legitimate reasons for not being promoted ("Oops--we did a half-assed job and released incorrect info" is not a legitimate reason).

also tried emailing them, but haven't gotten anything back yet!

But I emailed both science advising (the general email) and the advisor for the General Science program.

My advisor emailed me within 20 minutes. I don't think it has ever taken him more than an hour to get back to me about something. Also, a few hours later, when I got the email from UBC telling me what had happened, my advisor, not knowing whether or not I had seen that email, emailed me again letting me know about it. He didn't have to do that. He certainly puts in the effort and cares about his students, and does his job well.
