For the past two years at UBC, I have busted my fucking ass at school, making goddamn sure that I am taking all the courses required for my degree, and have been passing everything (just barely at times, but 51% is a pass). It may have taken me an extra year to do, but in April, I finished third year, and next year, my last year at school, I ( Read more... )

I know! The woman said I wasn't the only one freaking out, that they've received tons of phone calls. And you can't blame students for freaking out about something like this! I swear, they try and cause us as much distress as possible.

At least you know you aren't the only one!! Hopefully that will make it easier to fix.

Dr. Ramey (the microbiology undergrad advisor) and I had wondered if they had made a mistake because I had done third year twice--once as a general science student, and then as a microbiology student. However, within that span of two years, I have completed all the lower level requirements and core upper level courses, so Dr. Ramey said that I certainly do qualify for being promoted. At least if there is a problem and I am truly not promoted, Dr. Ramey can back me up! It's nice to have the reassurance that I did everything right, that I jumped through every hoop!

School is a fucking nightmare, let me tell you!

Ugh, that would suck if you did third year twice without needing to... =/ I did two first years (yeah, go me =P), but it was pretty much my fault, heh.

It's good that you have an advisor to back you up! But it sucks that he just referred you to science advising... Clearly they're not doing their job properly!

I did do third year twice, but it was a complicated situation. But after you get into the program, you can't "do third year twice".

No, my advisor is actually pretty damn awesome--he just doesn't control UBC's computer system and doesn't have the power to promote me to fourth year. That's not his job. But I can bet you, if UBC did not promote me before my true registration date, he would help me. I don't know what the advisors are like in other departments, but I wouldn't hesitate to say that the micro advisor is the best.
