I loved the scenes with Sam and Cas, some of Cas's lines were so funny and Sam's outrage at Cas's using the word hell was hilarious, but I didn't like how Dean was written in this episode. He just didn't seem himself. and there was no mention of how he's doing after Michael, although he seems to be comfort eating! So I loved half the episode but didn't care for the other half.
Ahh... yeah it's true they didn't focus much on Dean's feelings but we do have indication through talk of sleeping and the eating. I imagine he is mainly just really tired and relieved the mind battle is over and also very worried for Sam and Jack. Sure he feels guilty about the hunters too, because it was his decision to give in to Sam, but Sam is hurting even more so he can't be brooding right now. He has to be the anchor. Storywise, you can't really have everyone in pain at the same time either.
As soon as I saw Sam and Cas going off together I also thought, Jared and Jensen are taking turns taking time off and it's Jensen's turn *shrugs* can't be helped aye?
Yes, I agree with you that he's worrying about Sam and Jack, so is probably putting his own problems on hold (which is typical Dean!) and being the anchor for Sam. I must admit I enjoyed the episode much more on my second viewing and it was good to have a lighter episode after all the heavy ones recently.
It's pretty obvious now that they are splitting the J's up to give them both more time off, which is a little frustrating but at least this way our show can keep going.
Interesting also that the psychic "Mayor" said how he was just trying to protect his home. And Sam talks about the bunker being home. There is a connection there about how both were hurt by their home changing into something that was sad and everyone leaving.
I loved this episode too! I am SO worried about Jack, but the episode was great. So much good comedy and good serious moments too, as you said. I laughed a lot at Jared's performance when he prissily throwing Cas out of the house after Cas swore, and I've been laughing at "GOD HAS A BEARD!" for two days now, lolol.
Re the snacks, I believe one was angel food cake and one was devil's food cake. Dean was checking to make sure Jack picked the angel food, which he ultimately did. XD
I didn't even think of Back to the Future being referenced with this episode, but I think you're right! There was also a lot of Riverdale in there. They have a diner set too, plus the mayor's daughter looked a LOT like one of the actresses on Riverdale. I can only assume it was on purpose, heh.
Yeah, this episode didn't do it for me, at all. I did laugh a little at the beginning, but then everything just became to over the top for me. Justin!Sam gave me a lot of second hand embarrasment, and Dean felt very off to me. The only thing that saved this ep a little for me was Sam snapping out of it when Castiel mentioned Dean. Other than that... meh. I'm glad you enjoyed it though.

Huh, I've never seen Riverdale so didn't get that reference. Cool!

I also felt that it seemed a bit out of character for Sam, even a happy Sam, but very much silly Jared 😆 He is having a ball with this LOL
