Noah remembers the first time he met Bob’s daughter almost vividly. She was eight years old and tied to a chair. She cried out as they injected her with adrenaline, just so her father could see how much power she could push out. She knocked out the electricity when they threw water onto her, causing her to scream in a way he had never heard before. It was like nothing Noah had ever seen before. He knew the Company did questionable things, but this…it made his stomach turn, and he left the room once the power came back on. As he walked away, he could hear Bob encouraging the doctors to continue the experimentation. His daughter was tougher than that.
Later that night, on his drive home, no matter how loud he turned the radio up, all he could hear were those small girl’s screams. Over and over again, her voice pleaded for help, pleaded with her father to let her rest, and each time he could hear Bob’s calm cool voice assuring her that it was all for the best. That she would be stronger than this. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
When he got home the first thing he did was make his way up to Claire’s room. A rush of a relief spread through his body as she ran up to him, hugging his knees. He smiled brightly and picked her up, hugging her close to him. But in the back of his mind, he could still hear the screams of that other little blonde girl.
Perhaps he couldn’t save her, but at the very least he could do everything in his power to make sure nothing like that ever, ever happens to his Claire. That would have to be enough.
