I guess humans just can't live without rituals. Probably its part of their social structure. Olympics is full of rituals. I find it funny that they bring this huge flag into the stadium and everybody seems to be rejoicing at the abstract thing called the flag.

Colossal waste of energy in performing these rituals is another way of describing

Rituals in general: I was just telling Deepti how I felt so alien at both my weddings. Some fools going around a flame, throwing rice and ghee and all sorts of things into it and doing things to a stone.

Might be OT, but slightly related to this post in terms of flag, and other fierce nationalistic sentiments prevalent in today's world.

Well put. But I guess the issue people are condemning the Chinese display is because they could have done with simpler ceremonial stuffs instead of such extravaganza, given that they have lots of internal problems to deal with. See the amount of money involved. Yikes. Also, I don't see any point in China upholding humanity's finest points in one such ceremony when they have been imperialistic and brutally suppressive in Tibet and elsewhere. Their slogan of one world, one dream looks like a parody here. I do not mind if they show the rituals, customs of Chinese people, as well as some key scenes, video demos, music etc. But, I would rather watch the sport events than some of these unwanted grandiose self congratulatory display by the red communists of China
