keyboard and chords theory

May 08, 2006 15:29

Thanks to nearfar! I got his Casio 4-octave keyboard for messing around with (read: learning chords, western theory etc.,.) :)

Now, I need to somehow resume my music classes at Carnatica and that will leave me no time to think about stupid things like 'what is the meaning of my existence?'.

keyboard, music, learning, western

Hey sunson. You're smart.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-127360614147238543&q=satrang

do you know what song they are dancing to? Theres another song mixed in during their nritta part. Its kinda obvious. But the initial music seems to be from a movie, they way it begins and all. I could be wrong. Do you know the title or ragam by chance?

thx!

I don't know of a Filmi song that goes like this. I'm sure there must be atleast some tamil filmi song from the 60s that goes this way. The song is called "Natanam Aadinaar" (I've heard this song being sung and performed by my mother and her dance troupe in my childhood). Its in Raga _Vasantha_ ("Seethamma Maayamma", the popular Tyagaraja kriti, is also set to _Vasantha_). More compositions in Raga Vasantha here.

I just registered sunson.in :) Am going to soon start a carnatic.sunson.in where tonnes of info (ragas, compositions and some data-centric views on various ragas (close ragas, etc.,.) will be available :)

awesome! i'm looking forward to it.

do you like sudha raghunathan? some of her stuff is ok. Like the music from Morning Raga and this one Natanam Aadinaar. But the rest is not that great.

What? You actually have so much time to spare ? You are not subscribed to enough feeds then. I can spend one full day reading my feeds and I will still have more stuff for the next day.

On an orthogonal note, I, sometimes, seem to be taking time out from somewhere to sit and think stuff like this. Maybe, carnatica might not solve your problem after all.

Hi Jai,

Heard of the famous saying "Give a man a fish and he'll thank you until dinner, teach him how to fish and he'll thank you for a lifetime"? With music, the best way to learn to play is to learn to identify the notes _by the ear_. That means, a lot of trial and error and a determination to make out the tunes without the need for tabs.

Today, whatever I play, is what I learnt by the ear. I think it has allowed me to enjoy music at a great level than before. I'm sure I'd not be in this position by memorizing notes.
