In the descending order of how much I liked each of the movies:

I think I'm already a Toshiro Mifune fan! His mannerisms, His style of delivery (though I don't understand the language). Something to dig, really.

KaySov pointed out that A Bug's Life is nothing but Seven Samurai in spirit. and just a while ago, Jagadish Read more... )

Yeah, I tried to watch Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter,... and Spring and fell asleep in the beginning when the boy got off the boat and yeah... Sigh. Movies like that are way too slow. Even Vertical Ray of the Sun wasn't that slow. I love the scenery, but my gawd, it was certainly a bed timer.

Yeah, Its what I call "patient filter" movies. Those who don't have patience get automatically "selected out" from watching.

Yes, Rs.90 a piece (without case). or Rs.100/- with a plastic case.

I'm sure VCDs are cheaper. But what the, who watches VCDs anymore?

So far, I have been unable to find any Ray or Fellini films at National Market. Do let me know if you find decent quality Ray ones with english subtitles. Other good directors for you to watch out for - Jean Luc Godard and Jean Renoir.

Yeah, I couldn't find Ray either. Thanks for the Jean * pointers. Will watch out. btw, is madras' burma bazaar as rich in art-film content as bangalore's burma bazaar?

No clue about Madras Burma Bajaar. Don't even have a clue where a needy nerd goes for pirated DVDs in Chennai.

Yeah, Burma Bazaar is all the eletronics (smuggled, "duty-free stuff", etc.,.). Ritchie Street also has some VCDs and MP3 CDs. Not sure if they sell DVDs now.

do you like the work of director Wong Kar Wai? Most of his movies are quite intersting, with nice visual effects. I wish I can watch 2046, but i cant seem to get my hands on a copy with subtitles... grr...

hmm... the Chinese guys in my class dismiss it as trash. :)
I would recommend watching Balzac and the little Chinese seamstress.

Also, if you like some mindless entertainment, Stephen Chow's movies provide great time pass. My Chinese friends like his movies 'coz there are some hidden meanings in some of the action sequences/dialogues. These are mostly borrowed from Chinese history and mythology.

Ask them why the view it as trash.

Maybe its because they know he directed Happy Together, a really good film about a gay couple.

You should watch Rashomon if you like Kurosawa. I have just watched clips of it and it's typical kurosawa movie.

Its the story-teller that matters, no matter what story is being told

Rashomon makes this point clearer :) Different people tell the same story of a samurai being killed in forest in different ways.. Even the samurai's ghost tells the story which is different from what others have told till now !!

I liked his Throne of blood (which is based on Macbeth) too.. and cudn't agree more about Toshiro Mifune. His performance in Throne of blood ( as MacBeth) is certainly one of the best performances I have seen. It is impeccable.
