Helena spends all of Halloween in the library researching and writing a paper, ignoring students who walked by in costume or who hurried through their work to get to some party. She doesn't expect much from this holiday- she didn't enjoy dressing up as a child, and whatever candy she wanted she was perfectly capable of procuring for herself. Going home to Gina and a nice glass of wine was celebration enough.

"Gina?" she called as she walked in, surprised that she wasn't in the living room. It wasn't late enough for Gina to be in bed yet.

"In here," Gina's voice wafted from their room. Helena was expecting to find her curled up with a book in bed, bundled up. Instead, she was greeted by a vision in a black bustier and garter belt, long orange and black stockings and a witch's hat. "I thought you deserved a treat more than a trick," Gina said, barely able to contain her delight at successfully surprising Helena. "Happy Halloween."

Helena tried to hide her discomfort: small people were not her forte. She'd been awkward enough coaching the varsity lacrosse girls in their drills when she'd been team captain in school. Baby showers made her nervous. But Gina was perfectly at ease. Mimi had insisted they buy costumes together, so they were both dressed as princesses, lace and satin and tiaras and the whole nine yards of frilly frippery. Helena was wearing breeches and boots with her dressage jacket, and Gina had found a sword somewhere. So there Helena was, hauling what felt like ten pounds of candy as Mimi pranced along brandishing a plastic scepter at the ghosties and ghoulies under Gina's surprisingly indulgent eye ( ... )
