In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'. Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and...well, you know the drill. One Halloween they did go trick or treating, taking Gina's niece around Gina's brother's neighborhood - a good distraction from the fact that Mommy and Daddy were at the hospital about to bring home Mimi's little brother. Helena tried to hide her discomfort: small people were not her forte. She'd been awkward enough coaching the varsity lacrosse girls in their drills when she'd been team captain in school. Baby showers made her nervous. But Gina was perfectly at ease. Mimi had insisted they buy costumes together, so they were both dressed as princesses, lace and satin and tiaras and the whole nine yards of frilly frippery. Helena was wearing breeches and boots with her dressage jacket, and Gina had found a sword somewhere. So there Helena was, hauling what felt like ten pounds of candy as Mimi pranced along brandishing a plastic scepter at the ghosties and ghoulies under Gina's surprisingly indulgent eye.

"I'll let you ravish me later," Gina had promised, whispering in Helena's ear as they watched Mimi try on six different dresses in different shades of purple and pink, and Helena had turned bright red.
