Becker’s pleading “Go away” can’t keep Helen out of his flat, neither can the unexpected presence of a handsome, tight-lipped man and a woman whose soft beauty is mirrored in her son. Seeing Becker’s cool exterior crumble in the father’s presence Helen meets the sharp look with an unreadable smile, but the empty tenderness in the woman’s eyes unsettles her.
“How lovely to see you again, Lorna,” she clasps Helen’s rough hands and smiles at her son. “Didn’t I tell you my boy was a lucky man?”
And Becker’s silent “Yes” makes Helen want to run more than any plea.
