I didn't italicise either, because it feels too much like having and "ought to" read list. Had too many of those at school and university. I haven't read many Americans* either, but came to Steinbeck recently and absolutely adore him. WHAT a writer.
Incredibly busy with older children. I know you are in that lovely time of life where you are not sure you will survive physically from day to day with two small children. Someone told me once, though, that small children exhaust you physically, but older children exhaust you emotionally. It's somewhat true as you have to keep up with all the different directions they are going as they begin to move into their adult lives. I keep meaning to post a little about that...and then I have to run do something else. ;-)
I couldn't bold the only Steinbeck on the list because my high school assigned one of his other books rather than Grapes of Wrath--of course, my brain has gone completely blank on the title. The story was compelling, but SO depressing. This, to me, tends to be true of American "great literature", which is one of the main reasons I don't read much of it.
