I think we have to appreciate that the writers are in a tough spot. Peter Dinklage as Tyrion is essentially their "money" character, and so they have to make a lot of the plot spin around him. That automatically means that Tyrion/Sansa becomes a bigger deal than it is in the books (and I would argue it's a pretty big deal in the books too). That said, I don't really feel like they're playing up the Tyrion/Sansa angle any more than GRRM himself did. His early kindness to her is a big part of both their POVs in the books
( ... )
ugh, I hate that you're right about Dinklage as Tyrion being their "money" character. he gets soooooo much screen time, even when you compare him to others who have a similar number of POV chapters in the books. But honestly, while I was impressed with him in season 1, season 2 seems to be a LOT of forced acting on his part and I'm starting to get a bit tired of it. If I have to hear his line "they hate each other almost as much as they hate us" one more time...oaeigtae;gkaego
Yeah, me too. Plus, while Dinklage's non-verbal acting is amazing, his accent wanders all over the place, and I find it so distracting. I wish they'd just let the actors keep their natural accents!
The thing is, though, while some of Sansa's "sidekicks" are being relegated to secondary characters of a secondary character...some of them aren't! (Littlefinger gahhhhhh) In fact he (Littlefinger) is apparently WAY more important in the show than in the books.
They're also giving Arya a lot of screen time. I wouldn't say she's a secondary character at all. And I feel they're hyping up Gendry a lot a lot as well. Sigh.
Well, as a fan of Gendry I'm not disappointed by the hyping of him. He and Arya are sort of an awesome team, lol. *ships*
I actually don't like what they're doing with Littlefinger on the show at all, however. In the books, his brilliance is due almost entirely to the fact that he and his schemes sneak up on people. Here, he's front and center all the time, and he's far less interesting because of it. Again, I think this is HBO trying to capitalize on Aidan Gillen's name recognition. (He was a major character in the last two seasons of HBO's The Wire, and he was brilliant, fwiw).
There's a certain line of fandom/reviewers of the books that were pissed off about the LF-reveal in AFFC, because it "came out of nowhere" and I figure HBO is putting LF up in center earlier on to avoid the ranting and to make sure the audience can see what's happening- remember, TV scripts tend to be simplified and ASoIaF is one of the most complex nets of intrigue ever so they have to try to whittle it down and things like making LF's role more obvious/prominent is part of that. Not that I agree with it but I see why they're doing it.
I miss Sansa too :( I'd gladly cut some of Tyrion's scenes for more Sansa, but at the same time, I get why they would give us more Tyrion right now. I haven't read the books but if you want to cut to the chase (as a TV show must do, sadly), better give the audience the bigger picture. Tyrion, being at the center of the political drama in King's Landing, is the bigger picture...
Sansa should have all these secondary characters orbiting her own, supporting her storyline. Instead she's been reduced to a handful of minutes, and a handful or lines, and her greek chorus is all but non-existant. Not impressed.
Could a huge problem be that Sansa had very little to do in the Clash of Kings novel? She had very few POV chapters. I also think a huge issue is that there are a lot of characters and story lines this season. Plus, the producers have stated that they are dividing book 2 and 3 into this season and next season.
All that said, I'm very disappointed with her lack of screen time and story line this season. I really loved her chapters in the second novel and hear that her story just gets better is the third novel.

I think this is the major part. Most of what we got from Sansa in book 2 was just observation, not active movement and that's boring to watch on-screen. Since HBO put Sophie into the Emmy pool, I think they see what she has done as very important and that she will be increasingly present in the next season.
