Movie Musings: Guardians of the Galaxy

Approximately fifty billion years after the rest of the internet, I have finally seen Guardians of the Galaxy. While it was indeed a great popcorn movie with a script that seemed tighter and a bit cleverer than average and many scenes of Zoe Saldana being awesome, I had a persistent feeling of being off-kilter throughout which couldn’t entirely be ( Read more... )

I haven't seen the movie, and it doesn't seem to bear any similarity to the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' comic I read back in the Seventies (or was it the Eighties?) and and remember only vaguely, but I can tell you exactly why Gamora is not the main character. She is missing one thing that is absolutely essential for any action/adventure hero: male gonads.

Sad but no doubt true :( I sometimes feel like a little kid on a long road trip, kicking the back of the seat and asking, "Are we there yet?" "There" being, in this case, that magical point in The FutureTM where gonads would not be a determining factor in who gets to be the hero. ("We're almost there!" "You said that ten years ago!")

I was browsing your journal after reading your fic again and saw this.

I'm with you 100% - Gamora would have been an excellent main character. Unfortunately jana's right. Marvel has a tiny...issue with female leads.

(Pause for incoherent screaming about the need for a Black Widow movie.)

Your description though also reminds me (of course!) about one of my big issues with HP. Severus' story is FAR more interesting to me than Harry's, for all the reasons you outline about Gamora.

I'd have loved to see a Gamora-centric movie. LOVED.

Everything about her said MAIN CHARACTER RIGHT HERE. I almost wonder if someone originally wrote the script that way, and then someone else said, "Nope, it's gotta be Peter. Audiences will connect with Peter. He's just more relatable. Trust us, we're Hollywood."

Yeah, every time Black Widow walks on the screen, it's like a great movie trying to break free. Then Tony walks on and is like OR WE COULD HAVE ANOTHER MOVIE ABOUT ME, and Marvel agrees with him. Come on, guys, just one? With adequate funding and promotion? Would it kill you?
