Tom, as a rule, doesn't go on rescue missions away from his own world any more. He promised Door. This is different, however, and helping Andrew on his world is something Tom's done before. Helping Andrew with Merriman along for the ride- well. Tom's safe as houses ( Read more... )

Merriman glances at the books that Tom has brought, and then to Mac's computer. He sets his fountain pen and a small pocket notebook on the table -- there isn't anything else he's likely to need for a mission of this nature.

'By all means,' he says with a nod. 'I suppose we should begin by defining our respective positions and tasks?'

"I'm tech girl," Mac explains with a matter-of-fact shrug, folding her arms. "Ruler of all the electronic stuff. My job's to hack in and shut down their communications without getting caught."

Tom raises his eyebrows in Mac's direction more in reaction to her words - which make little sense to him - than anything else. "Erm, yes, very good. I'm pleased you know what to do in regards to that, as I have absolutely no clue. I'm here to aid and assist with the magical shielding of our people as they go after the scythe."

Passive shielding only, don't forget, Tom. We still don't know how your magic's gonna interact with theirs.

Merriman nods thoughtfully, tapping the fingertips of one hand lightly on the table. 'So I presume that my task is to generally interfere with their internal magical systems and prevent them from falling back on less technological methods of communication.'

*Andrew nods, and there's an extra level of respect there. Tom and Mac are his friends; Professor Lyon is also a friend of sorts, but not a peer.*

Also, and this is the really important part -- I'm hoping we can make the whole building, maybe also a wider perimeter around it, sort of ... persistently unnoticeable. While all this is going on. I really, really don't want local law enforcement getting involved.

'It would be better to work on a perimeter basis than to try anything of that nature to the building itself.' His gaze goes a little distant, as if he is working out a rather complicated equation in his head. 'Something extending as far as the kerb, perhaps...and preferably self-contained and self-perpetuating, to ensure that it will not be compromised if one of us becomes distracted by events elsewhere.'

His eyes clear, and he looks back at Andrew and Tom. 'It should be set up independent of any other magic, I think, and left in place until it is dispelled on command.'

Tom listens carefully to Andrew and Professor Lyon. He's looking forward to gleaning some magical knowledge from the Professor, actually, and he's particularly excited by this whole plan.

"I still say we ought to just Petrify the lot, but yes, yes, I know, passive shielding only. I have a general shielding charm that will activate from a distance. I can focus more specific and dense shielding if I'm called on by anyone. Don't worry, I shan't go overboard."

I'm counting on that, Tom.

*Andrew's looking at him very seriously, but doesn't say anything else aloud.*

Tom meets his gaze, the kidding about gone entirely. "I'll do what needs to be done."

There's a half-beat of silence before Merriman redirects the subject slightly ( ... )

Tom listens intently, wishing he could offer Professor Lyon his magical assistance. However, he'll be busy enough on his own.

Still, if Merlin finds something challenging, then it is challenging indeed.

He's beginning to feel rather restless. It's time to get down to the business at hand.

*Andrew's frowning thoughtfully.*

The other problem with the more active interference is that it'll be really, really obvious to them that they're being jammed.

*It's possible there's a reference to giving the raspberry trying to come out right now, but he doesn't let it.*

Any way we could use both? Like, start with the more passive interference, and then ramp it up once the real chaos starts?

'Certainly.' A half-smile. 'No need to make it any more complicated than it ought to be for all concerned, I should think.'

Tom grins. He likes this behind-the-scenes business. It's much more exciting and much less dangerous than being on the front lines.

"Andrew, just give me the word, and I'll activate the shielding charm. I'm ready."

He's literally bouncing on his feet. He might be a tad eager.

Soon as Team Sneaky's good to go in.

Which ... *he checks his watch* should be pretty soon. Do you need to be on the site to do it?

*A glance at Merriman includes him in the question.* Either of you?
