Tom, as a rule, doesn't go on rescue missions away from his own world any more. He promised Door. This is different, however, and helping Andrew on his world is something Tom's done before. Helping Andrew with Merriman along for the ride- well. Tom's safe as houses ( Read more... )

Merriman glances at the books that Tom has brought, and then to Mac's computer. He sets his fountain pen and a small pocket notebook on the table -- there isn't anything else he's likely to need for a mission of this nature.

'By all means,' he says with a nod. 'I suppose we should begin by defining our respective positions and tasks?'

Merriman's mouth twitches in near-amusement at Tom's eagerness.

'I can work from here if you have something that belongs or once belonged to them -- nothing large or even magical in and of itself, merely something through which I can establish a connection. I would probably set off any number of alarms through the sheer fact of my presence if I were to show up there without much warning...and I think we can save that for later, if circumstances demand it.'

"I'll be fine working from here as well," says Tom. He'll have to be. He promised Door he was staying out of any action that might lead to bodily injury. "The charm merely needs to be activated."

Something that once belonged to them ... you mean to Wolfram & Hart?

*Andrew digs into the back pocket of his jeans, and comes out with a business card.*

This do?

Merriman smiles -- and there is a hard, business-like edge to it.

'That will be ideal,' he replies. 'Would you set it down on the table for a moment? I may have to run a few tests on it before I attempt to work with it.'

As Andrew sets down the card, Tom pulls a few extra enchanted coins out of a robe pocket and hands them to him.

"Andrew, do make sure everyone on your team has one of the coins I gave you on their person. Here are some extras, just in case. If they don't have one, then my charm won't protect them."

*Andrew nods.* I've handed them out already, and the team leaders have been told to make sure everyone's got one.

*A glance at Merriman, and then across at Mac.*

We all good to go?

'One moment, if you please?' Merriman looks down at the business card, frowning slightly in concentration. He reaches for it, but does not pick it up -- instead, he places the tip of one finger on the surface of the table a few inches from the upper left-hand corner of the card, and with four swift, sharp strokes, he traces a rectangle around the outside of it.

(Anyone looking at the card in that moment might see the neat black lettering flicker with a unpleasant reddish light -- almost like a throbbing -- before becoming nothing more than an ordinary piece of card again.)

Merriman nods, and his mouth still has the hard-edged half-smile. 'Elementary, but effective enough.' He looks back up at Andrew. 'At your command, Mr Wells.'

"I'm ready," Tom says simply. His eyes don't leave the card, however. He felt that.

All right. Let's --

*He cuts off at an insistent buzzing noise, and glances down at his pocket.*

One sec. *Andrew pulls out his cellphone and flips it open.* Yeah?

Uh-huh.

*A deep breath.* Okay. Clock's ticking. Thanks.

*He closes the cellphone and looks back at the others.* Jonathan went in twenty minutes ago, and hasn't come out.

We better get started.
