Life is full of these shitty paradoxes, isn't it? Your friend is doing better and sallying forth into his life, and you feel like you've lost something in this process. Both things are true and valid. For what it's worth, I think that when people leave, a fair percentage of them wander back eventually. It used to really tie me up - the thought of losing people - but then some of them did a Jimi Hendrix-like 'slight return' and I slowly learned that nothing is really over until you're dead. It's all good, possum - you will see him again in time.
And don't do that prostitution thing. At least not at the airport.
