So, where have I been? What have I been doing? It's a loong story...but I'll shorten it a bit
Once upon a time, on December 30th 2006, in a home office in Austin, TX, a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Home died. Not from any hardware problems, but from a failure of the software. Unable to fix.
My reaction: Shit.

I need to redesign it. I'm trying to figure out how to use Coppermine and Joomla. They're installed but I have no idea how to configure them.
Brochures..just thinking about how many I have and the scanning/pics I'll need to redo...(I took a ton of pics last year of my collection, and at this moment, I have no clue what I did with 'em! *slaps forehead*)
..hehe, Ubuntu does rule. I'm surprised how much I love it :D

Nice to be back. Things have slowed down at work with the summer almost over, so now I have some time to devote to LJ, and other online life

Yeah, for a couple of months early on, I think I actually did! Trying to figure things out with the *(*&(*&)(%%$ computer, etc.
I think things have finally evened out again.
...Hm. Gonna have to do something about that avatar of mine...something a bit more up-to-date...

That info about Ubuntu is very helpful as I'm not keen on upgrading to Vista. How compatible is it? Can it open .avi files or MS Office docs?

.avi files can be viewed. Best viewer is VLCPlayer, which is available on all platforms. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
You can open MS Office documents. Ubuntu uses a suite called Openoffice.org. It has a word processor, spreadsheet, something called Calc, and Draw. Very similar to the MS office suite. Oo.org also has versions available for Windows and Mac (I think the mac version is called Neooffice?) http://www.openoffice.org/
You can also use certain Windows programs within Ubuntu with a program called Wine. It's a Windows emulator. MS Office 2000, I believe, can be run under Wine, (Maybe Office 2003 also?) Older versions of Photoshop 8 is said to work well, as well as Dreamweaver 8 & CS3. (I've not tested these myself though)
Information and some of the programs that work on Wine can be found here: http://www.winehq.org/
