So, where have I been? What have I been doing? It's a loong story...but I'll shorten it a bit
Once upon a time, on December 30th 2006, in a home office in Austin, TX, a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Home died. Not from any hardware problems, but from a failure of the software. Unable to fix.
My reaction: Shit.

I'm beginning to feel a bit more motivated on the site since I just reupped for another two years with GoDaddy...I'm payin' for it, better put that $$ to good use.
I saw that book...and, don't know if it was a good idea or not, but bought it. It was actually being sold at a Borders store which surprised me.
Linux does get some getting used to, but not too bad. Just like a Mac or Windows it has its own set of quirks. Gotta say I learned a ton about the hardware I use and what hardware companies to stay way from and who are Linux-friendly. For the most part I lucked out because everything just worked on three different computers...an oldATI graphics cards to our printer/copier/scanner. Also seems the older the hardware the better the support. (Only minor problem I had was with trying to figure out how to get a dial-up modem to work, but then decided to go wireless instead)
Try out a bunch of different distros. A good list can be found at www.distrowatch.com The top 100 is off on the right-hand side of the screen. User-friendly ones are any of the Ubuntu flavored ones (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu--educational edition for kid), also PCLinuxOS, LinuxMint, Fedora, OpenSUSE. So if one doesn't work another one just might :)
