“Mom, dad, this is Mr Park.”
The silence that followed made Yoochun a tad bit uncomfortable.
“This is the Mr Park you’ve been talking about?” Mrs Kim asked, staring at Yoochun with saucers for eyes.
“Yeah. Why?” Junsu asked, confused.
“We just…didn’t expect him to be so young,” Mr Kim admitted. “You must have just graduated from college.” He stuck his hand out and Yoochun shook it and smiled. “Three years ago,” Yoochun said. “It’s very nice to meet you.” He moved to Junsu’s mother who went from wide eyed to sparkly eyed.
“So young and so handsome,” she gushed. “How old are you?”
“26,” he answered politely.
“Come, come sit down,” she said, pulling Yoochun away from the other two men who were both not so pleased with all the touching. “Would you like a drink? Wine, maybe?”
“Water is fine,” Yoochun said. “You have a very nice home.” He didn’t say that just to be polite. Their house was decorated beautifully and Yoochun could see how Junsu fit in perfectly.
“Thank you,” Mr Kim answered for them. Junsu and he had joined them in the living room as Mrs Kim went to get their drinks. Junsu pushed him down onto the couch and sat next to him.
“Make yourself comfortable, Sonsaengnim,” Junsu said sweetly and it took all Yoochun’s willpower not to roll his eyes.
“So, mister Park-“
“Please, call me Yoochun.”
“Ah, Yoochun, then,” Mr Kim smiled fondly and sat down on the chair across from them. “I hear you’re doing your best to get our Junsu into college?”
“And it’s going well,” Yoochun nodded. “He’s working really hard and if he keeps it up he’ll be starting at Seoul University next year.”
The shocked expression on Mr Kim’s face was unexpected. “Seoul University? Are you sure?”
“Hasn’t Junsu told you about this?” Yoochun asked, looking from Junsu to his father.
“Well,” Junsu said hesitantly. “I didn’t want to say anything until it was actually confirmed. I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up and have them crashing in the end.”
“I told you, you just have to keep doing what you’re doing and everything will be fine,” Yoochun said and almost reached over to take his hand, but changed his mind at the last second. “I’m confident in this and you should be too.”
“Are you sure about this?” Mr Kim asked again. “Isn’t it really hard to get in a university with that status?”
“With a little effort and Junsu’s soccer talent, he’ll be great,” Yoochun explained. “A full scholarship is a very likely possibility.”
“Eunhee! Did you hear that?” Mr Kim yelled.
“Dad…” Junsu said, sounding a bit embarrassed.
“Sweetie, don’t yell when we have guests,” Mrs Kim yelled back, just as loud. Yoochun found it cute. He saw the familiarities between parents and son so clearly and he was happy to learn where Junsu’s quirks came from, however he also saw where Junsu’s moments of brattiness could come from. Mr and Mrs Kim were extremely nice people and they probably spoiled their only son with everything they had,
Mrs Kim came back with a tray filled with drinks and put it down on the coffee table. She handed Yoochun his glass of water and he accepted it with a smile.
“What were you so excited about, honey?” Mrs Kim asked, sitting down on the armrest of her husbands chair.
“Our sun is going to go to the best university our country has to offer,” he said proudly.
“Dad, we’re not sure about that yet,” Junsu reminded him.
“It doesn’t matter. Just the fact that it’s a possibility is worth something!”
“Is this true?” Mrs Kim asked. “Do we have you to thank for this?” She looked at Yoochun again.
“You have your son to thank for this,” he quickly answered. “He did all the hard work. I just told him about the possibilities.”
“He’s lying. He helped me with everything,” Junsu said. “He even made sure I get to play soccer when I get to there.”
“This is amazing, Susu!” his mother gushed and jumped up from the armrest of her husbands chair and over to her son. She grabbed his face and pressed a sloppy kiss on his cheek.
Yoochun chuckled at Junsu’s beet red face.
“I knew everything would work out for you in the end,” she sighed. “Diner is almost ready. Why don’t you give Mr Park a house tour while we set up the table?”
Yoochun knew this was the moment. He was going to see Junsu’s room.
Junsu seemed hesitant, but got up anyway. “Right this way, Sonsaengnim.”
When they were standing in the hallway at the foot of a flight of stairs Junsu hissed: “I think they want to marry you.”
Yoochun laughed. “You wanted this, not me.”
Junsu lead him up the stairs and stopped in front of a closed door. “Remember. You take a look and don’t say anything.”
“Got it,” he nodded and felt a strangely nervous. Junsu opened the door and went in first. Yoochun followed him and looked. Next to the giant dolphin plush animal on the bed and the big dolphin painting on the wall, it wasn’t all that weird. The walls were light blue; the covers of the bed dark blue and the floor were dark wood, like the rest of the house. His desk was white and covered with trophies. Yoochun immediately knew he didn’t use it for studying.
He picked up one of the trophies and put it down again. He wasn’t allowed to talk. He sat down on the bed and took the dolphin plush toy on his lap.
“That was a present,” Junsu quickly explained. “You can’t throw away presents, you know.”
Yoochun held in his laughter and carefully bounced on the bed. “Comfortable,” he muttered.
“The room looks much smaller with you in it,” Junsu said. “It feels so weird.”
“It’s nice,” Yoochun said.
Junsu didn’t seem to care that Yoochun had broken his promise. “If I close the door they’ll get strange ideas,” he said. “If it wasn’t for that, I’d totally do you on that bed.”
Yoochun got up and put the dolphin down. “We should get out of here, before you lose control.”
Diner was such a success, it was scary. Mrs Kim even made a not so subtle comment about how great it was that Junsu met a young gay guy who could help him through these rough times.
“26 is still very young, isn’t it honey? Your dad and I are 7 years apart ourselves and everything worked out great for is!” she had said and Mr Park had nodded. Yoochun had never dreamed of a reaction like that. All that was left was their actual coming out, but they had agreed on waiting until Junsu had actually graduated so that the school still didn’t have to know anything and even if they did find out somehow, his job wouldn’t be in direct danger.
“I want to meet your mom,” Junsu said when he walked him out to his car.
“You will, one day,” Yoochun assured him. “I forgot to ask, did you finish your essay?”
“Yep. One day early,” Junsu grinned. “I’ll mail it to you tonight.”
“And I’ll look it over. See you tomorrow.” He opened the door to his car and wanted to get in when Junsu stopped him and pressed a kiss on his cheeks.
“This doesn’t look that weird, right?” he chuckled. “All students kiss their teachers on their cheek.”
Yoochun rolled his eyes and wiped his cheek off. “I hope you don’t kiss any other teacher like that.
He got into his car and drove off. He saw Junsu standing on the sidewalk in his rear view mirror until he turned the corner.
