Yoochun got the shock of his life when answered his phone and got Junsu’s mother on the line.
Yoochun had brought Junsu home the night before, staying a safe distance away from his house, of course. Junsu said he would call if anything happened with his parents, but in the end all he got was a text saying everything was all right.
They had both gone to school the next day but around still hadn’t crossed paths when lunchtime came. That was when Junsu’s mother called.
“Mister Park? This is Kim Eunhee, Kim Junsu’s mother.”
Yoochun’s heart had stopped for a whole second. He had no idea what to think. Did she find out? Had Junsu told her about them? Was Junsu’s mother, the former Miss Korea, going to kick his ass?
“Ah, Mrs Kim. To what do I owe the honour?”
“Well…My husband and I had a very good talk with Junsu the other night and it went much better than the one we had the night before. Junsu said he had talked to you and that you helped him a lot. I wanted to thank you.”
“Oh…” Yoochun didn’t know why he was blushing or why he started reorganizing the things on his desk, but he did. “There’s no need to thank me, really. Junsu is a special kid.”
“He really is and he doesn’t confide in people very quickly, but I’m happy he has a teacher like you he could trust and talk to. My husband feels the same way.”
“Really, Junsu is a great kid and I’m happy to help him with everything I can-“
“He also told us that you’re the one who helped him out with his grades. We got a call from Mister Shim saying how much he has been improving ever since.”
“I’m not the only who helped him though. Mister Shim helped a lot. And of course, Junsu’s own effort-“
“Still, you were the one who pushed him. Junsu looks up to you a lot and I honestly want to thank you. And of course my husband too.”
“Well, all I can say is that a great kid like Junsu must have great parents.”
Mrs Kim laughed and Yoochun smiled. She sounded like Junsu.
“Before I forget, we’d like to set up an appointment with you to talk about Junsu’s future. He has been set on going into soccer his whole life and now that the chance is slim that’s going to happen, new plans have to be made. Would it be to much to ask to ask for your help?”
“Of course not. I’ll talk to Junsu about it and we’ll see what we can do about college applications-“
“Really, I don’t know how to thank you. Maybe you should come over for diner sometime? We’d love to have you over!”
“Ah, maybe. I’m happy you called, Mrs Kim.” Yoochun tried rounding up the conversation without making promises he’d regret.
“I’m sorry for keeping you on the line for so long. You must be busy. We’ll try and set up a diner date for the four of us, okay? Bye, Mr Park!”
“Bye, Mrs Kim,” Yoochun finally said and hung up. How fucked up would that be? Having diner with Junsu and his parents…He shivered at the thought. Right when he hung up he heard a soft knock on the door and saw Junsu standing in the entrance.
“Was that who I think it was?” he asked. His voice was still huskier than usual.
“Did you give them my number?”
“I just said that you helped a lot, nothing more,” Junsu quickly said as he entered the classroom and stood in front of Yoochun’s desk. “They just wanted to thank you and I thought why not.”
“Your mother wants me over for diner.”
“Well…”
“No, Junsu.”
“Why not? Maybe if you meet now and they love you, they won’t mind as much when we tell them about us.”
Yoochun couldn’t say that that wasn’t true, but he still felt uncomfortable with the idea. “I am really curious about your room…”
The light blush forming on Junsu’s cheeks was enough to get Yoochun laughing. “What makes you think you’re ever going to see my room? You can’t.”
“Then I’m not coming over for diner.”
“That’s not fair!”
“Honestly, I just want to see it. I won’t judge. Or laugh. Out loud.”
“Fine, but you can’t say anything about it. You look and that’s it.”
“Deal.” It wasn’t until after that, Yoochun realized he had just bargened himself into doing he didn’t want to do from the beginning.
“They also want me to look at college applications with you and I think that’s a very good idea since finals are in two months and most kids have already applied.”
“What’s there to look at? It’s going to be state college anyway,” Just shrugged.
“Well, no. We’re either getting you into Seoul University or the Open University.”
Junsu laughed. “You’re insane. You always do this. You always expect way too much of me. A few months ago my average was a 57, or don’t you remember that?”
“Your average now is a 71.”
“Isn’t the minimum to get into Seoul U an 80?”
“It would be nice if you had an 80 average, but not necessary. You haven’t forgotten that you’ve been playing soccer for Seoul’s state team ever since you were six? Getting a sports scholarship should be easy for you. Maybe you’ll even get a full ride. Can you imagine how much your parents will love me if I get you into the best university for free?”
Junsu stared at him for a while and Yoochun saw the wheels turning in his head. “That means I get to play soccer in college?” he finally asked and the excited look on his face could have killed him.
“That’s exactly what it means. So which one do you prefer? Seoul University or the Open University?”
“How should I know?”
“It really depends on what your major is going to be, so I would start thinking about that first. We’ll just apply to both for the time being. I’m sure they’ll be jumping for someone like you, so we can just choose the one that offers you the best.”
“So I’m not going to have to do anything?”
Yoochun laughed. “You’re funny. There’s enough for you to do. Applications for scholarships go together with a 4000 word essay. And I’m giving you a deadline.”
“What? Why? I can still apply for two months, right?”
“Your average is a 71 and I told you to bring it up to a 75. You failed, so you get punishment. Your deadline for the essay is in exactly seven days at-“ he looked at his watch- “12:30. I’ll help you with anything you need within these 7 days. If you pass the seven days, you’re on your own.”
“God, I hate you.”
“But you’re going to love college.”
“College sounds like a lot of hard work, so I don’t know how I can love it.”
“Well, you’re a lot of hard work too, but it doesn’t stop me.”
“Ssssh,” Junsu hushed, looking around the empty classroom. “That’s a secret!”
