OpenID settings are fun, and while what you want sort of exists, it would be good to have it defined more clearly in the settings.

Currently, OpenID users can set and validate an email address. For the purposes of comments, OpenID users who have not done so are classed with anonymous users. OpenID users who have successfully validated their email addresses are classed with registered users.

*nods* It's that whole 'sort of' thing that is irksome.

Doesn't OpenID allow blog owners outside of the LJ-Verse to sign in as a recognized entity instead of the truly nameless, faceless void that is 'anonymous?'

It does indeed. The trouble with OpenID is that there are spammers as well as blog owners, and they set up rogue sites with OpenID, so not all OpenID logins are safe.

I still would like to see the settings separated, to give a journal owner more control, and, say, set 'Unvalidated OpenID' between anonymous and registered users, and clarify registered users that this includes validated OpenID.

This is also an opportunity to examine our documentation, as it is possibly under-documented. (In addition to suggestions, I'm also involved with the docs team, and while documentation isn't managed in here, it's pretty quick to get a docs conversation started and moved over to the proper place.)

Well, as I said in my suggestion, I'm all for more choices. :-)

+1.

But also, it would be nice to be able to allow openid users from only specific sites.

I bet that could get fussy fast, but I like the idea. Feel like writing it up properly?

I would love to have more options in this regard. And I also like the idea of having four categories: Registered users, Validated OpenID users, Unvalidated OpenID users, and Anonymous

I feel the better solution is to more fully integrate validated OpenID accounts with standard LJ accounts, not to create another layer of segregation.

The original idea wasn't to keep out OpenID users, but to give the LJ owner the chance to eliminate completely anonymous comments.

Integrated or not integrated OpenID wasn't part of the original idea...

I understand your idea, I only object to the idea of splitting into four completely separate categories that allows for keeping OpenID accounts from commenting but allows standard accounts.

To crib a bit from azurelunatic I'd be happy if your choices were "everybody" (allows anonymous comments), "unregistered users" (allows all OpenID users), "registered users" (allows validated OpenID users), or "friends".

What I don't want is something like "everybody" (allows anonymous comments), "all OpenID" (allows all OpenID users), "registered OpenID" (allows validated OpenID users) "registered users" (allows standard LJ users), or "friends".
