While I had thought that I had seen a very similar suggestion at some point, I was completely unable to locate it.

Utterly useless.

I usually have multiple accounts logged in at all times from multiple locations, so my "online" status would be vastly misleading.

Being logged in to LJ doesn't mean I'm THERE -- often I'm not!

Generally I don't like any online account to display whether I'm logged in or not, personally...

And I often walk away from the computer I'm logged in on, which would leave the perception I was logged on when really I was at work, or the grocery, and would not be back for hours.

Not sure how helpful this would be. I may be logged in to LJ at home but not be in front of the computer, or I may be logged in but doing twelve other things in the foreground while my my LJ page is open in a tab in my browser. Many people used the "keep me logged in" cookie, so they would appear to always be logged in.

For real-time communications, if someone is on your Friends List, you can always use LJTalk to communicate with them or find out if they are online.

Yeah, this wouldn't work well at all, and I don't see any suggestions in this implementation that would overcome the problems inherent in it. You haven't even really defined what would count as being "online". A lot of people log on and then leave themselves logged in, whether they're actually active on LJ or not.
