Speaking in developer terms, it can very well be implemented as a table that would basically store the info of "block this address from receiving notifications" and just that -- this way, disabling notifications won't lead to the information on which ones user used to be subscribed for destroyed (however, if a particular email has notifications disabled, there should be an option on "manage subscriptions" page to re-enable it).

If the check for disabled notifications is enabled on the low level, exceptions should deliberately be made for reset password emails (these can be blocked using by different means available to staff).

Will the user need to log in to use this, or even need to know what livejournal account is associated with that email to use this?

I like the suggestion but I'm not sure an unsubscribe all link is the best solution. Don't people mostly object to announcement e-mails?

I like the idea of having a one-shot 'unsubscribe to all emails' in each email- but I'd rather it be a link to an LJ page that gives you the option. That way it can be accessed even without an email, and it is a confirmation click so you won't accidentally unsubscribe to everything.

I could see people accidentally unsubbing, and then complaining because no-one told them there was a new profile design in beta :)
