Short, concise description of the idea
Users should have the ability to Recommend and maybe also Pan, posts and comments.

Full description of the ideaEach post or comment would have a Rec or Pan link. Recs and pans would be tallied and displayed ( Read more... )

EXACTLY.

When I think of "recs," they're far more qualitative. They're actual *posts* to your journal or to a community, saying, "Y'all should read this because X, Y, Z."

Recs as the OP defines them makes it a sheer useless-to-me numbers game - sure, 10 people may have recced a given post, but that gives me no information on why that means it's a valuable post for *me* to read.

A tangental aspect of this number system is that since posts are rec'd by numbers, those communities and individuals with large numbers of viewers will always come-out on top. A person with a dozen friends may write the most insightful post evar on the LJ, and it would easily be buried by a vapid post to, oh, I don't know, some celebrity-oriented community or LJ-celeb posting whatever they post.

Popular doesn't necessarily equal quality, so the system is flawed if the intended purpose is to recommend quality or relevant material.
