Mainly, its hard to get a GIF file under 40KB even when its under 100x100 pixels

I do wish you could at least have an icon that's 40kb, rather than needing to get it under 40kb. (I create them all the time, and one that's exactly 40kb never seems to be seen as that by LJ...)

(sigh)

Yeah, some of us just love icons -- and especially animated ones!

i've created a few animated icons that i just couldn't get under the 40kb mark without removing frames. these weren't huge. i'm very frugal. the "overages" were between 55-60kb looking the way I originally intended.

i have another suggestion. how about "x" slots that allow up to 100kb? for example, if i've got 40 slots, give me 5 "large" slots. heck, limit it to paid accounts, if necessary.

What about keeping the 40KB limit, but upping the dimensions to say, 150x150? That would give more freedom with regards to size but keep the bandwidth use down...

The only issue that I can immediately see with that is that it will break some layouts (likely official ones, and definitely some homemade ones ( ... )

I tried uploading some supernatural gifs last night and they were both
48KB each -_- I say make it atleast 50KB ^.^
Also the trading idea sounds fair to me.
