Posts from large communities would always come to the top.

Well, that could be solved by http://aldabra.livejournal.com/friends?show=P :)

I'm vaguely neutral about your actual idea, mostly because tracking kinda seems to address some of what you want already, at least on a smaller scale? I use it to follow the threads I want (so not every single comment thread from every single entry posted to my friends page) in my inbox instead, and to keep updated on those threads a la minute, since the comments arrive in my inbox in the order they're posted.

I find I read my friends' page frequently enough that I catch the original posts shortly after they've been posted: at that stage, it's often not clear which ones are going to attract interesting discussion. But I shall experiment with tracking some of the usual suspects; thank you.

I like it. But then I would love to be able to sort lots of things on LJ...

Would the 2-weeks-or-1000-entries limit of friends pages apply to this, or some other limit? How would this handle screened comments? Comments being deleted?

How much of a drain would this sort of sorting place on the servers?

I like this, even though it seems very complex.

Is this still being considered? It seems relatively easy to implement by sorting on more recent comment date rather than most recent posting date.

I don't knowof this one being considered yet. It's been three years, so you can post the idea as a new suggestion, if you like.
