Keep in mind that banning is separate from defriending. Banning prevents someone from commenting in your journal ( among other things), but it will not remove the user from your Friends list, prevent the user from seeing your protected entries, or prevent the user's entries from appearing on your Friends page. Granted, removing the user from your Friends list does these things, and as far as I know, there's no comparable action for defriending that one can take for one's friendsfriends page.

It's a bit strange to have a user both friended and banned; that's why I didn't suggest that his/her entries should be removed from the friends page as well, but it would certainly make sense.

I've done so before - there was a situation where I didn't mind if a certain person wanted to read my entries, but I simply didn't want to hear anything from that person. I do agree that that's rare, though. I simply wanted to point out the difference here because many people think that banning a user also prevents that person from seeing protected entries, which isn't the case.

Understood. This comes from the dual nature of friending - it both modifies what you see of others and what others see of you (if I were to design the system from scratch, I would separate those notions more completely), while banning works only one side of the equation, as it should, being only concerned with what you read.

Now this puts me in mind of possibly asking about expanding banning into something, let's call it the "bad boy list" for giggles. Like maintaining a community, you'd have several features, any of which you could apply to members of the bad-boy list, a la carteBan from commenting in your journal. (current ( ... )
