I can see where some people might not want to leave a goodbye message, so the option NOT to leave a message should be open, but for those who would like to leave one... why not let them?

Upon thinking about it, actually I can see some potentials for drama with the notices people might leave, and perhhaps some melodramitic people would delete their journals every other day just so they could leave such a message.

*sigh*

On first blush, it doesn't seem like a horrible idea, but, yeah.

After thinking on it... there's plenty of potential for drama.

I'd be interested to hear your concerns/ideas as well.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Drama. I can picture the Deleted Journal message on most journals to read something along the lines of "god i hate [NAME OF BOY/GIRLFRIEND] leave me alone i hate u" or "I HATE THE WORLD GOODBYE SUCKERS F*** U ALL".

It sounds like a good idea in theory, but in practice you run into problems.

And what exactly is wrong with the examples you just provided?

I would support this.

If I were ever to delete my journal, I'd want to post a friends-only notice to the effect of, "I'm leaving LJ, not the web. E-mail me at [foo] or IM me at [bar]. This message will self-destruct in 30 days."

I don't see a need for a filtered message; if you're deleting your journal anyway, you can just de-friend everyone that you don't want to see it. There's also no need for a private message; that would be pointless. So there should just be a little checkbox that reads, "friends-only?" to determine the security level.

Except the message probably wouldn't self-destruct in 30 days...

Yeah, but "This message will self-destruct in at least 30 days" sounds way less cool (even if it makes my screened deletion message more approvable).

:-P

This seems like a good idea to me, too. Often people will post a day or so before letting people know why they're deleting, but it would be nice to have a notice that stayed up for at least a month so that all of their even semi-active friends would know what happened.
