i would say 90% of webpages on the net track ips. how is it a privacy issue? i honestly don't understand. because someone can know if you've gone to their webpage/journal? it can already be done anyway - just not w/a livejournal specific utility. *confused*
OK, then here's the other problem with logging IPs.
Tracking IPs doesn't really give you much information. You get some region information but that's about it. If you're trying to track what one user is looking at, you don't really know if it's them unless they have a static IP. And I think most places are like where I live--there is really only one ISP here that everyone uses and no options for broadband. Everyone in my town essentially has the same IP, except the last digits, which are dynamic.
...And just because lots of other sites do it doesn't mean it's OK :)
There's a reason that sites like Anonymizer are popular.
Once you have this in your journal, you can check the last 30 hits to your page.
But...what is the difference between her checking your journal and you checking your journal to see how many times she's been there?? Both strike me as being kinda weird!
Really it doesn't even have to be specific usage stats I would like.
Number of visits, number of uniques (if people are concerned with privacy this is how to avoid privacy issues it's just number of unique IPs instead of actual IPs), referring page (I like to know who linked to my journal or if they came from my site etc...), countries...basic usage that anyone would be able to collect. As a matter of fact with the right stats package and the 1x1 pixel I could track tons more without them ever knowing. I don't care to I just want basic stats.

i have been using http://www.sitemeter.com/default.asp?action=home on my LJ to track IPs and provide visit/page view data. sitemeter has a basic free service (which is the one i use since their paid option requires javascript code embedding which LJ doesn't support). however, you'll need to be a paid lj subscriber to embed the (non-javascript) web counter html code in lj web page.

Hi Geoff,
You mentioned here that you need to be a paid LJ subscriber to embed the non-javascript web counter html code in the lj web page to track statistics. Would you give me a link to where I embed that code to do so? Also, I noticed that it appeared on your page in the right column. Would that also track the visits from your entries that appear on your friends' page? Thanks.

Logging IPs is a privacy issue, and all the developers are against it, as are a lot of users (including me). I don't think it should be done at all.
