I was trying to post a very long entry from DreamWidth, which has higher entry length limits than LiveJournal does. The problem was definitely that the entry was too long: when I copied the entire thing into LiveJournal's "write an entry" page, it told me that it was too long, and I ultimately solved the problem by posting it in two parts.

I mentioned it on DreamWidth support and they said there was nothing they could do, because xml-rpc errors aren't very informative. It is quite possible that "cannot connect" is the error message given all the time, whatever the problem is. If that's the case, then that's not good enough and my suggestion is to make the errors more user friendly.
