Title
Make error messages given by XML-RPC interface more helpful

Short, concise description of the idea
Make the error messages more user friendly, so that the person or program receiving the error message can successfully interpret what went wrong and what they should do to fix it.

Full description of the idea
When trying to post an entry that exceeds the character length on the regular post an entry page, the error message given is "Entry too big". This is easy to understand and self explanatory. It is obvious what should be done to fix the problem.

When trying to post via the XML-RPC interface, the error message for the same problem is "Failed to connect to http://www.livejournal.com/interface/xmlrpc"

This error message sounds like a connectivity problem, not an entry-too-big problem and makes it hard to know what action to take in response.
An ordered list of benefits
  • User friendly error messages are helpful to everyone interfacing with LiveJournal.
  • User can understand what they did wrong when they get an error message.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Someone would have to code this, but it shouldn't take too long.
  • Maybe you think not many people use this interface for posting, but a lot of people use it when they crosspost an entry from another site and the XML-RPC errors are passed on to end users like myself who find them confusing.
