I understand the reasoning behind this request, but because of shared IP addresses (such as a place of business), this could be a can of worms...

(My sister and I share the same IP address here from home, by the way.)

I want to ban comments in MY journal - so if I shoot MYSELF in the foot - I will blame myself.
Why do you worry so much about MY journal?

You're not suggesting a change that would ONLY effect YOUR journal, however. And if available, this might be confusing to any number of users (especially in community use).

So I still have to say thumbs down to this one. Sorry.

If it is confusing for you (read - you are not so smart), do not use it.
This is as simple as that.

A ban like this is so easy to circumvent by a number means that I don't really see it as being terribly helpful.

I need it so it is VERY helpful for me.

It isn't helpful to you though, because it doesn't work. As has been explained in other comments, circumventing an IP ban is as easy as cycling your router, or restarting your computer, or connecting to a proxy. This would not help you in blocking people from commenting in your journal in any way.

You may not believe it, but it is VERY helpful.

Pretend YOUR IP has been banned from commenting in THIS community, for any one of a hundred different reasons that can happen a hundred different ways, many of which have absolutely not one thing to do with you.

Now do you feel the same way about generic IP banning?

No, really, ACTUALLY pretend it's banned. Delete all of your comments and don't comment again, not on this or any other post. Pretend that your IP has been banned, and there's not a think you can do about it. Implement your suggesting where your opinion is, then we'll talk.

This comment is null and was not posted as it originates from an IP that was banned from this community on 3/18/2006

OK, comments have reappeared again…

I'm going to be controversial and come in in favour of the suggestion, at least as far as it applies to anonymous posting.

I personally would be quite happy to ban the whole of Japan and China from commenting anonymously in my journal. It may seem prejudicial, but (a) I have very very few friends who are likely to be commenting from there, (b) they could log in, and (c) I'm fed up with anonymous spam comments, which are now happening almost every day, and the majority of them come from Japan and China.

If LiveJournal could come up with a way of stopping all the stupid spam comments* then maybe I wouldn't need to. But it doesn't seem likely to happen soon.

*How about a severe per-IP rate limit on anonymous comment posting, for example?

There is nothing controversial here - users badly want this feature.
