Currently, the navbar displays according to the settings of the journal. Since the navbar is there to make browsing easier, it should display exclusively in the viewer's language.

Yes please.

However with the translations already based on volunteers and a lot not being updated this won't help everyone as the translations for the navbar will take time and not necessarily be complete or updated. This may result in people having different or outdated navbars depending on their default language (e.g. the FAQs that are updated in English but not other languages), or a repeat of the problem with the homepage where parts are displayed in Cyrillic if a non-English language is set as default.

But where there does exist a navbar in the viewer's language, it should be displayed in the viewer's language. I have my language set to en_LJ, and right now, if I go to some journals, I see a navbar in Russian, which I can't use because I can't read it. I'm sure Russian users encounter the reverse problem a lot as well. If the navbar is intended to help the viewer navigate the site, it should be in the language the viewer prefers.

If there is no navbar in the viewer's language at all, that also needs to be addressed, but that's a separate problem to the thrust of this suggestion as I understand it.

My point was that if the navbar is set to conform with the user's default language, it still won't help many users for whom the navbar is not translated or is not updated with the latest version. There also exist issues for users with non-English defaults who are being presented with Cyrillic characters that they cannot read. For this to be effective and helpful, the translation system needs improvement. I didn't say that this makes the suggestion a bad idea; I only meant to point out possible issues that could make it hard for people if this was implemented. I'm sorry.

Yes, please! This drives me nuts - it's a feature intended to help the viewer, it needs to be in the viewer's language.
