I cannot see how this would work. Do you mean that when someone types in their interests, they then get shown a list of comms that have those interests too? Or just random comms from the lj_spotlight?

I don't think that doing a search for relevant comms on every interest a person types in is going to work, server-load wise, so how do you suggest limiting it?

This. The same purpose can be served by doing an interests search.

The only advantage I can see to this is that it could help newbies to LJ get involved in communities they MIGHT be interested in, but it really doesn't take that high of a learning curve to use the interests search, I don't think.

Supposing if interest searches were unb0rked and "you've added your interests, now would you like to see communities sharing these same interests?" were added to the setup process?

And I would not be entirely against it if, in addition to the interests search, a few "LiveJournal Recommends: ____" things, such as from previous spotlights (tying in http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/1013138.html a bit), were shown up top.

This would eliminate the learning curve on setup, and introduce the concept of interest searches gently for later exploration.

True this, and if it can work properly, that can be very useful to newbies (and LJ veterans), yes. :D

This sounds like something that could be turned in the direction of a possible revenue stream as well: have an excellent community or journal and want more exposure for it? Purchase an ad on interest search pages for the relevant interest.

Interests are extremely easy to search through LiveJournal search functions, as well as through people's interests on their profiles. I think this would not only be unnecessary, but annoying.
