Title
Recommended Communities

Short, concise description of the idea
Display recommended communities to newly registered accounts and existing users.

Full description of the idea
In order to spotlight communities and attract more members, LiveJournal could present a list of recommended communities to users (much like Twitter presents a list of people to follow).

When new accounts register, present a list where new users can check boxes to select communities he / she may be interested in and watch them. For example, if the user is interested in celebrity gossip, recommend ohnotheydidnt. If users are interested in seeing unique items other people come across, recommend found_objects. Love cat macros? Join cat_macros.

Since existing users won't get to see a list like new users would, perhaps devise a way to display communities of interest. Display an interstitial, one-time box with community recommendations. Maybe users will find something they never knew about.
An ordered list of benefits
  • Increase traffic / interest to certain communities.
  • Increased awareness of users of what LiveJournal has to offer. Another form of the LJ_spotlight.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Only certain communities will be shown. Some might get angry if their community isn't spotlighted.
  • Existing users might get annoyed at the interstitial box.
