One of the things that I've tried to explore in Nothing Ever Happens is the loss of identity that comes with the realisation that you aren't as arrow straight as you believed. I'd assume it would be worse. It's one thing to change while the cement is still soft. Once hardened, so to speak, I couldn't imagine the damage trying to change would cause.

Amen! And the toll is so widespread. I have a former in-law who divorced my aunt after he couldn't live as a straight man anymore. They had half-grown kids at the time. It was hard for him to have to start all over, trying to figure out a new way to be, to relate to people; it crushed her; it messed up his kids for years; his family freaked out and basically disowned him.

It really was like a bomb going off in the middle of so many people's lives. As complicated as coming out is when you're young, it is soooo much more difficult later on!
