Identity

One of the things that I've tried to explore in Nothing Ever Happens is the loss of identity that comes with the realisation that you aren't as arrow straight as you believed. It's not just your 'internal' loss but the way other people perceive you. The fact that you upset their ordered little world. Realising you are gay as a teenager is a whole bunch of bananas but shifting along the spectrum in later years tilts your whole world on its axis. You don't have the time to adjust and make similar friends. Your internet friends are great but RL mates, they take some adjusting.

I encountered this loss of identity in The Handyman by Claire Thompson, where Jack is recently widowed, and meets Will, a young openly gay guy. The books deals with both their insecurities as they try to adjust and the attitude of Jack's sons.

Being older doesn't make changing easier. It just brings its own complications.
