Miss Saigon

Yesterday I saw Miss Saigon at the Burswood Showroom in Perth. I didn't really know much about the production other than it was a retelling of Madam Butterfly in the setting of the Vietnam War. I'd heard mixed reviews from trusted sources and therefore went in with a very open mind. I'd come to the conclusion that this was either a love it or hate ( Read more... )

i'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your birthday present so much. i saw the show before it went to broadway. (i lived in boston at that time and in those days, shows tried out/practiced to the boston audience before going on to nyc)

even though i don't remember it well, i know i enjoyed it. but like you said, the music was not memorable and i never heard a song from the show again. unlike shows such as "phantom" and "les mis"...where the music seems to live on in my head and on my ipod!

also, i don't think film can beat a true emotional experience (laughter or tears) you get at live theatre. and you're right...enthusiastic applause is next to impossible when you're searching and hoping you brought an extra tissue!!!!

thanks for sharing.

I'll have to remind myself of that in four months time when it actually IS my birthday LOL. But Mum said she'd buy me a small token gifty, just so I'd have something to open.

I love live theatre, but I have deprived myself for far too long. I'm beginning to make amends. On Friday I'm taking my girls to see Annie.

"annie" with your girls...what a terrific experience you will all have!

i loved the film, too but once again...there's nothing like live theatre.

ENJOY!

I am REALLY glad that you liked it! I wish that I had but it just didn't do it for me, and probably for this very reason -
There were no melodic catchy numbers, the music was far more emotive and operatic in style

How did you find the sound? I really struggled to understand what was being sung a lot of the time and I think that made it even less enticing for me.

We certainly agree that the Engineer was great though!

I was thinking last week that you were seeing the show on the 20th, so I was close. I'm very pleased that you liked it. I hoped you would!!

The sound was fine, no problems at all (though my Gran said that it was a bit loud for her, and hence difficult to catch each word).

You were not the only one who had said they didn't like it. Another friend saw it on Broadway and said it bored her to tears.

Leo has played the part of the Engineer for years now (in London as well as Asia & Australia), over 2000 performances - it really shows.

We caught the Saturday matinee and I used the new Perth-Mandurah line for the very first time! It was a great day out, three generations out on the town together :D

I'm so glad you loved Miss Saigon. I found it deeply moving and I was able to feel the pain and torment and was left crying my eyes out.

I trusted your judgement when you said you liked it, and I guess it's no surprise I loved it too. Just another thing to add to the list of things we have in common. Thanks for telling me to pack the tissues, I really needed them!

I saw this in San Francisco in the late 80s. Yikes, that's a long time ago! I'd always been interested in Vietnam and remember being very excited from this aspect. I liked it a lot.

I loved it! I cried, it gets bonus points just for that (I'm such an emotion whore LOL).

This week I took the kids to Annie with my Mum. After Miss Saigon, she & I very disappointed. It was VERY amature, which I kind of expected but not to the degree it was. I swear my high school production was better.

More than once, I've been impressed by high school productions.
