fic: Hand of the Crow

Jan 01, 2007 10:46

So as I was trolling around the fairly limited ASoIaF fandom this morning looking for some place to self-promote, I finally read and remembered that not only does Martin not condone fiction for his series, but that his drooling - and evidently masochistic, given the long spaces between his books - fandom generally hates fan fiction as well. So, ( Read more... )

Well, if you meant the cursing for me to remember, you'd better repeat it. Does this mean you were just thinking nasty things?

I have the first line of part le deux for you:

Jon found Jaime Lannister drunk and naked in the baths under Castle Black, his beard wet and tangled, his golden hand abandoned on the floor.

Truly, most ASOIAF fans are not masochistic enough. It is a terrible exercise in self-flagellation to want fanfic in a book fandom where the difficulty of faithfully portraying world, characters, and style is compounded by the author's disapproval of such. That said, I am not most people.

Of the five ASOIAF Yuletide 2006 fics, I thought yours the best. For one, "Hand of the Crow" is long and plotty. Two characteristics I particularly enjoy in fanfic and the absence of which in this tinny fandom I've long lamented, feeling somewhat cheated given 4,000+ pages of canon plots within treacherous plots. In fact, I think I'd be gushingly grateful to you for the length alone. Then you elevated yourself to divine status for not only capturing GRRM's style but the essence and voice of the characters and setting, all in an intriguing and dramatic scenario that builds on canon without parroting it. It also certainly doesn't hurt that a) I'm rather fond of Jon Snow, b) I've been missing the cold wilds of the North something fierce with the AFFC/ ( ... )

My one question: What, exactly, is Jon doing?!

Certainly, he could be searching for Benjen. Another idea is that he intended to pay a visit to the betrayers at Craster's keep. Or maybe he sought to contact the free wildlings, under Tormund. His visions, Ghost's behavior (if it is Ghost, who is supposedly mute, after all), and mentions of Bran point to warging. A dream that led him to believe Bran is alive and hinted at where he might be found? Does the reason(s) why Jon's ranging have anything to do with his apparent self-doubt?

"I can name myself neither crow nor wolf. Not rightly."Stark? Debatable but, fine, Jon's technically a Snow. Not a sworn brother of the Night's Watch though ( ... )

Definitely I am the first to admit that me + plot = mostly a no go. This is probably the longest fannish story I've written, and it took less time than I care to admit (I love deadlines in an unholy way) so I am in no way surprised that there are several dozen plot holes to wiggle fingers through.

Aside from my sheer GRRM-less boredom between book releases, I think those plot holes are the reason that I'd even considering following through my unsubtle threats re: writing another part. BECAUSE YOU'RE SO RIGHT. Who the hell is at the wall? I have no clue. I rely mostly on metaphorical smoke and mirrors to distract from such things, so damn. Caught with my pants around my ankles.

I have to say that I was definitely too cryptic with what is the main freaking plot point of the story, as well. Perhaps the first line of part II should be Jon to Jaime: "I am a warg and while in warg form the other night I met my half-brother, who is also a warg, and now I am very concerned about him being beyond the Wall and maybe I am having priority ( ... )

The situation at the Wall's the only plothole that jarred me. I have no problem with you glossing over Margaery's and Cersei's trials-I, in fact, admire the deft skill with which you turned the story to other matters-because whatever happened, it was in King's Landing. Stannis and Melisandre on the Wall directly affects all the characters in the fic. As the fic stands, the most prominent mention of the two is in Jaime's fantasy of Melisandre fucking herself with Stannis's (fake) Lightbringer. Makes me feel like the story isn't finished. Not hard to resolve, IMO, but needs mentioning.

I have to say that I was definitely too cryptic with what is the main freaking plot point of the story, as well.No need to be quite so blunt in stating the plot, lol. You left more than enough clues for me to figure out Jon was warging and in contact with Bran. Jon believed Bran dead until now, so I could see him having a ( ... )

it's also not non-con when you get the reach around subterrain January 19 2007, 02:13:06 UTC
MAN YOU KNOW IT'S HARD TO KEEP TRACK OF THAT SHIT. I'm like a meth junkie trying to peddle: how can I keep the grams and cents balanced when I can't even keep myself straight? You know if I keep on with this extended metaphor I'm heading towards Jon Snow as over-privileged kidnappee / Jaime Lannister as his scared but loving keeper. God I love you, JT.

And what the hell happened to sensible mormon Peter? I hope he used the money for something damn awesome, like a nail-spiked piece of 2x4 for when we all show up at his house. I mean, what a prick. Do you need a flashlight or summat?

I read a lot of slash fanfictions, expecially in Italian which is my mothertongue, but for this one i have to say that it is really awesome.
Ser Jaime and Jon Snow are both two of my favorite ASoIaF's characters, and the whole fanfic seems to be written by Martin's own hand. Lovely.

Aww. Sorry for my bad, bad, bad English. T_T
