fic: Hand of the Crow

Jan 01, 2007 10:46

So as I was trolling around the fairly limited ASoIaF fandom this morning looking for some place to self-promote, I finally read and remembered that not only does Martin not condone fiction for his series, but that his drooling - and evidently masochistic, given the long spaces between his books - fandom generally hates fan fiction as well. So, ( Read more... )

Jon/Jaime: If I was ten times better at writing I would totally spend my life abusing this pairing.

But I'm not, therefore I don't :( And waiting for GRRM to write gay sex insert an angst-ridden story arc dealing with the clash of their dysfunctional personalities into the series (which would be, like, improperly self-indulgent and utterly pointless and the best part of the whole series hands down) is a bit like believing in Father Christmas: getting harder by the decade.

BUT YOU CHEATED AND WROTE THE FIRST INSTALMENT INSTEAD OF HIM!!! AND IT'S IMMENSE. Srsly. Immense, I tell you.

Let me quote a few random snippets of brilliance to refresh your memory:

Jon Snow still remembered the arrogant lordling who'd strode [should be stridden here, but so not the point] into Winterfell's Great Hall in green velvet and golden curls, and Jaime did not care to disillusion him with the crippled, bitter man he'd become. Mostly, Jaime found it easier to play-act at being himself: the boy who'd slit a king's throat then warmed his throne was dead, ( ... )

On the subject of being a Stark, TEH ANGST IS EXQUISITE:

“I can name myself neither crow nor wolf,” muttered Snow. “Not rightly.”

...

“I would kill you,” Snow told him, still steady, though his voice splintered, “if I were a Stark.”

Really, Jon's staggering potential for existential angst and depression, while making him an annoying little shit in some people's eyes, has always had a squeal-inducing effect on the drama queen in me. He and Jaime might be twice as unstable together as they are apart, but observing them as they fuel each other's complexes and insecurities is just too hot engrossing to pass up. (I think there might be something wrong with me. Like morally ( ... )

I won't lie: a) yeah, I've totally lost interest in ASOIAF fandom (mostly because Sansa/The Hound makes me want to claw my eyes out, and what else is there, really?) and b) this comment was probably the highlight of my month in that it was so unexpected and generous and gratifying. Holy shit, thank you, mysterious stranger who shows up and thinks about my story more than I did! I can't tell you how awesome it is to get comments like this. VERY AWESOME, HOW ABOUT.

And you're right - the story wasn't supposed to end there, I worked on a sequel for a little bit (that sentence I quoted to opprobrium above? that's as far as I got, plus plot notes) and then gave up because seriously, the fandom is just small and uninspiring and sometimes I think that the research/re-reading I'd need to do to get back on that horse wouldn't be worth it. I write primarily AUs in my other fandoms, I suck at being constrained by things like "but what about Cotter Pyke?" because my reaction is first and foremost "who the fuck is Cotter Pyke?" D: Ergo, I suck at being an ( ... )

Urgh, that fandom. All the yapping about dumb crap makes the stories seem less worthwhile. You know, you should watch shadow-truths too, she has some really tight stories under flock. Glad you're sticking around though, maybe our interests will collide in some other unexpected fandom. :D
