Post-Christmas Post

Dec 27, 2007 01:06

I hope everyone had a very happy retail holiday!

Christmas post @ the RL journal.

The books I got this year were:

Death of a Writer by Michael Collins. Does Collins realize that it is possible to introduce a new character or piece of scenery, etc, without immediately launching into that thing's entire history?
The Egyptologist by Arthur ( Read more... )

books:general, rec:fanfic, real life

"fur"-lined books? ^_^

Oh, I have to go read Yuletide. There are so many wonderful fics on that site. And s2b2 too. Only read one so far. *sighs* So much reading to do!

Boots! Fur-lined boots! From my mom. I tried very hard to be discouraging whenever she mentioned winter footwear (which was frequently, these last few weeks), but she decided to risk it anyway.

If you can only read one fic and have seen The Prestige, you should read that one. But World's Fair and Christingle are absolutely amazing as well. A-Typical is funny but I question how many Shuuji/Akira fics you (by you I mean "I") can read before they all start to sound the same. The crossover is a crossover. (<3 crossovers! I love the character voices.) Finally, Everything Changes is fun and easy reading, and I agree with the author of Equilibrium that Takuya is WAY better.

I have not seen any of these fandoms, I fear! T_T But I will definitely be looking at them slowly. Oh so many lovelies this holiday season. <3

ETA: Oh wait, I know His Dark Materials. I'll check that out sometime when I'm not drowning in fic. <3

Do, do! Though with that fic, it's almost not necessary to know the fandom, since the charm is in the details.

very nice bookage, there!^^ You don't have to do anything special to your wireless connection, except be in range of it? Make sure your DS is fully charged, though, or leave it hooked up if it's not--using the wireless functions takes more energy. (How far in are you? Have you gone Underground yet?)

Huuh. I thought I was in range yesterday, but maybe I was not in range enough? I'll try again today from the computer room.

I'm at the Safari Zone. I've gone Underground but only for the bare minimum -- what are you supposed to do down there? Mine for gems? Play Capture The Flag? I don't think I even have a flag to capture.

Safari zone--ahhh, the swamp^^ You find these crystals, of different colors and sizes, and if they're too small (less than size 99), you can bury them and let them grow bigger! There are different peddlers down there selling goodies to decorate your Secret Base, and even Drills if you want to relocate--all the goodies cost crystals of certain sizes & colors. Also, all the Fossil critters can be found in the walls--you get an Explorer Kit from an old dude in...uh, oh, I think it's Oreburgh? That is also where you go to revive the fossils. There are also Shards that will get you different TMs from a lady living on the edge of the swamp (10 of a color= 1 TM), sometimes Revives or Max Revives--you never know what you'll find when you go down! Just remember to keep your bag in decent shape by burying some crystals each time and checking the 'Treasures' section to get the Shards, Fossils, and whatnot transferred to your regular bag--the crystals cannot be brought out of the Underground. As for the Flag bit, I think that's battle-related? ( ... )

What's The Egyptologist about, out of curiosity?

And oh my gosh, Mairelon/Enchanted Forest/Sorcery and Cecelia crossover: I'M SO THERE. I've been bookmarking rec lists crazily but have only read about two fics other than the three I received. Meanwhile, other people seem to have gotten through nearly half the archive. How do they do it?

How do they do it?

With liberal use of the back button. XD Don't like the opening section? Paragraph? Sentence? Go back and read something else ( ... )

I just received Sorcery and Cecilia for Xmas; now I cannot wait to read Mairelon/Enchanted Forest/Sorcery and Cecelia crossover! XD

What did you think of The Alienist?

The crossover follows up on the plot from the second book (The Grand Tour). But it's all explained in-fic anyway -- as long as you recognize the characters, you should be fine.

(I wonder if I should be ashamed to like crossovers that consist of: character A recounts the plot of his book to character B while character C fixes character D's problems. It's kind of cheap, but I love it anyway.)

Can I get back to you on The Alienist? I'm, er, not completely finished with it (just taking a break to read something lighter).

That's good to know, but I'll still finish the first book (at least) before I wade in.

As for in-story recaps, I've read so many non-fanfic works where this happened, and all I can say is, the shorter, the better. It reminds me of RPGs where a new character comes in on the story and filling her/him in on the details takes forever.

Yeah, The Alienist is pretty dark. I have a few things more to say about it, but I shall wait. ;)

Aii! What a fabulous list of recs. I adored the stories for The Prestige and for His Dark Materials, thank goodness for Yuletide or we'd never get these...

Were you a BotI fan? I can't recall, but there are several excellent stories for that this year too. I mean they're really fabulous. <3 <3

Aren't those stories awesome? Although frankly speaking, a lot of His Dark Materials fic suffers from Escaflowne Syndrome, where the characters are incapable of moving on and waste their whole lives pining away for each other and cursing the cruel fate that keeps them apart, etc.

I am a BoTI fan! Or at least, I've read the manga. XD; I saw your Anotsu/Rin recommendation! That story was pretty awesome, though I was a little grossed out by Anotsu having hot sexx0rs while deathly ill. ^^; But this is a personal hangup. Rin's voice and her routines are spot-on.
