In conservatism, irony-challenged reality_hammer thinks that practicing Islam should be considered a "hate crime"If we go by his own definition, practicing Christianity should be a "hate crime" as well, given the crap that comes out of Pat Robertson's mouth and that there are plenty of passages in the Bible that are no less offensive than what can be found in the Koran (not ( Read more... )

I hate people that don't understand the difference between practicing something and being a radical about it.

It's close minded and retarded. =-\

I was going to post the same thing. This guy is in fact everything he hates about Islam. I find that to be true with racists too, everything they bitch about always seems to be exactly what they portray themselves.

Reminds me of the documentary I watched where this woman was saying she hates 'blacks' (her words, not mine) because they're dirty, uneducated and lazy... and the documentary goes on to show just how dirty her own house is, and just how truly ignorant they are.

Yep! I work with some really big racists and I have to bite my lip because their arguments for hating 'the black and the wetbacks' are as if they were describing themselves to me. If someone comes in with money or obviously living a better life style them right away they start bitching that they someone must have manipulated the government. I mean heaven forbid they got an actual education or were raised better then the maroons I work with. I feel bad saying the people I work with when it is really just two who talk like that.

I don't like Islam, but practicing it is no more an automatic "hate crime" than practicing Christianity, which conservatives rarely seem to hesitate to try and force everyone to do.

Out of curiosity, why don't you like Islam? I find the religion maybe a little more troubling than I do all organized religions, but I don't know whether that's just an emotional reaction to 9/11 and related events. As an atheist I find most religion suspect, either on logical, emotional, or political grounds.

I find the culture which has grown up around the religion of Islam to frequently be troubling, but not very much more so than, oh, extreme Mormonism or Catholicism (or, hell, Puritanism) is. I don't know much about the non-Abrahamic religions, but I'm sure there's all sorts of stuff the Atheist in me wouldn't like about Buddhism and Hinduism, too.

My dislike is theological, not personal. Islam irks me for the same reasons that Christianity does-- we're "The Big Three," our faiths are all connected and share common roots, and yet, I believe two of them have gotten it very, very wrong. Buddhism and such don't inspire the same reaction in me because the Buddhists and I aren't claiming to worship the same G-d.

Jewish?

Honestly, I suspect the only reason Jews haven't had a chance to get things really, really wrong yet (though they're having a shot at it in Israel right now) is because it isn't a religion which proselytizes or aims to convert the entire world. As such, it's remained a small faith rather than a global one just in terms of numbers of adherents.

And I must admit, my distaste for Islam or any other religion springs mostly from my dislike for morality through prophets and not philosophy.

Today my brother gave me a long-ass lecture about my tichel because he thought I'd converted to Islam. His exact words were "do you really WANT to look like a fuckin' Muslim? ARE you a fuckin' Muslim? Jesus Christ..."

People. They make me sad. :(

I'm so sorry.

I think tichels are pretty. I want one, lol.

So get one! I'm not Jewish or Muslim or any other group that covers their hair, but that fact didn't stop me!

(I did ask pester her opinion on goyim wearing tichels - the official Orthodox stance on it is "if they want to dress conservatively, who are we to say no?" Their fashions are open to everyone)

I remember seeing Pez say that. I actually remember that thread. I started looking at all the links in it and I was like "OMG PRETTY CLOTHES AND SCARVES, YAY!". lol

I might get one. I'm trying to grow my hair out, and it's annoying to have it in my face all the time.
