In conservatism, irony-challenged reality_hammer thinks that practicing Islam should be considered a "hate crime"If we go by his own definition, practicing Christianity should be a "hate crime" as well, given the crap that comes out of Pat Robertson's mouth and that there are plenty of passages in the Bible that are no less offensive than what can be found in the Koran (not ( Read more... )

Today my brother gave me a long-ass lecture about my tichel because he thought I'd converted to Islam. His exact words were "do you really WANT to look like a fuckin' Muslim? ARE you a fuckin' Muslim? Jesus Christ..."

People. They make me sad. :(

I'm so sorry.

I think tichels are pretty. I want one, lol.

So get one! I'm not Jewish or Muslim or any other group that covers their hair, but that fact didn't stop me!

(I did ask pester her opinion on goyim wearing tichels - the official Orthodox stance on it is "if they want to dress conservatively, who are we to say no?" Their fashions are open to everyone)

I remember seeing Pez say that. I actually remember that thread. I started looking at all the links in it and I was like "OMG PRETTY CLOTHES AND SCARVES, YAY!". lol

I might get one. I'm trying to grow my hair out, and it's annoying to have it in my face all the time.

I've talked to so many people whose original reaction to finding out I study Arabic is, "WAIT. So are you a some kind of Muslim now? Oh good because omg Fox News said burqas and terrorism and falafel oh my!"

FALAFEL = TERRORISM YOU GAIS.

I've had similar reactions to my studies. It only gets sadder and sadder.

I've thought about studying Arabic. The written form is so beautiful, but knowing me, that's all I'd ever master.

Also, falafel sounds delicious right about now.

It really is beautiful written. And spoken, it uses practically every sound the human body can produce. That totally gives me a Phonetics boner.

I've also been told that the poetry of the Koran can't really be appreciated unless you read it in Arabic, evidently it's really inspiringly gorgeous.

I can believe that. Just hearing recordings of the call to prayer is enough to give me chills and I barely know what they're saying.

Me too. I never knew Arabic was so lovely until I studied religion last semester in school. Islam in general is a beautiful religion to me even though I'm pretty much an atheist at this point. Hinduism will always hold a special place in my heart though.

Aww, we must have skipped the clicks, burps, snorts, and farts in my class.

LOL Can produce with the oral/nasal passages. I've never heard the clicks either, maybe they're one of the only exceptions. But that was pointed out to me by a friend who's a native speaker of it. *shrugs* Anyway, I can't help loving the truly ancient-ness of it, either. It has to be one of the oldest languages still spoken in the present-day.

Good grief, how silly.

Honestly, I think tichels look very classy and elegant, and they don't really look like the hijabs I see muslim girls wearing round my city, so I can't see where he is even getting his ideas...

It's a scarf that covers my head, so that means it MUST be teh Islam! Never mind the fact that my neck is uncovered... At one point he asked me why I didn't just wear a bandanna and I laughed in his face.

(oh, and his version of an apology? "Well, it looks good on you, but I worry about you, kiddo.")

are you Jewish? if you are why wouldn't your brother know why you're wearing it?

elsolylaluna June 24 2007, 00:52:37 UTC
I'm not. I just appropriated the tichel for my own nefarious (read: completely benign and fashionable) purposes.
