Hmm. Have just read this long argument, and tangentially, does anyone know if the Canadian versions of the HP books are the same as the British ones, or did we get the Americanized ones? I could probably figure this out on my own, except for I'm not quite sure how. So if someone just wants to do the work for me, that'd be great ( Read more... )

Grade school/elementary school down here in our school district, ends with fifth grade. Sixth grade begins middle school :)

Ron/Draco!

:p

Back to the subject at hand (or one of the subjects at hand)...the level of analysis over at hp_essays is mildly overwhelming. That said, I did make it through the argument you linked to. I didn't realize that the text of the US and British versions of the books are different. I had assumed that all English language versions were the same. Huh.

Generally speaking, I stay away from essays, but I got a bit caught up in that one. I didn't realize that the texts were all that different, either. But then, I guess mine isn't different, because the Canadian and British versions are the same. I don't know. It just seems like a strange thing to do, to have two versions within the same language.

I'm almost inclined to purchase the British versions to see the difference. Which leads me to believe it's all a marketing ploy to suck dollars wasy from "enthusiastic" fans.

Canadians get the brit versions of the books, because all the spellings have our extra 'u', a sweater is a 'jumper' and dessert is 'pudding'.

Yes, and our first book was the Philosopher's Stone vs the US version the Sorcerer's Stone.

Because you're Canadian, like me! I was shocked when someone told me that Americans never, ever say "grade x", only "xth grade".
