I'm still wondering how Rob Liefeld's Cable was able to move his head from side to side what with those ridiculous shoulder pads! :)

Liefeld's character designs are a different kind of ridiculous. Though, come to think of it, they're different sides of the same coin. The so-called sexy designs are sex appeal at the expense of everything else, while characters like Cable are action hero coolness at the expense of everything else. He has a scar! And a glowing eye! How could anyone on that team (heck, in most of the entertainment industry) miss the memo that you can be super appealing to ladies while wearing a uniform that doesn't expose more than your face and (occasionally) hands ? Well, just look at... wait, on second thought, don't look at Murat because he's yet another kind of ridiculous. But any other Napoleonic dude will do.

Honestly, i think Bioware, at least, gets it. Look at the Dragon Age franchise and all the fangirls drooling over Alistair, Sebastian, Cullen, etc. And Final Fantasy franchise, from what I've seen of it, had plenty of pretty-boy male protagonists.

Also, sir or mademoiselle/madame - props for working Murat into a reply. :)

All Final Fantasy leads have pretty boy good looks (and some of the villains too), so this just feels like a natural evolution of that.
