Sexiness vs Practicality in superheroine costume design - a dancer's perspective

May 20, 2014 21:09

If you are into superhero comics and take part in the superhero comics fandom, you know that costume designs for female superheroes can be something of a hot-button issue. Too often, superheroines' costumes seem to be designed based on sex appeal and not a whole lot else. Male superhero costumes are not always too terribly practical either, but at least they don't usually display skin simply for the sake of displaying skin, and, quite frankly, they don't have costumes that emphasize the T&A.

On the other hand, we see that, in real life, women dress in clothes that exposes some skin and, in some cases, may be flattering to certain parts. It would make sense that at least some superheroines would want to dress up like that. But that raises a question - would it possible to do costumes that look "sexy" without lapsing into credibility-straining ridiculousness?

In a video she did a couple of months ago,
Sheakoshan
decided to tackle that question. She comes at it from a unique perspective. As a dancer, she has seen plenty of people moving around in spandex, and she knows what it can and cannot do. And what she said is actually pretty interesting.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of spandex costumes for superheroes. I prefer costumes that look like clothes - maybe exaggerated, anime-style clothing, but clothing nonetheless. But if I ever wind up giving my Public Domain Heroes idea another try, I'll definitely keep this video in mind.
