On college education, family expectations and creative pursuits

My mom recently did a post touching on how people with disabilities are treated and the implicit expectations society (and Russian society in particular) places on them. It's a very interesting post, and I would recommend that any Russian speakers reading it check it out ( Read more... )

I think you've being always missing one important distinction here: having to graduate from college and being able to earn a living. The first one was always "optional" in my eyes, so the fact that you dismissed my statements that you did not have to go to college, is solely your responsibility:). But the latter one was and is a must from my perspective. And this is a fundamental difference between me and Aunt Anya. I am really glad that you are able to make money doing the thing you love to do, but if it won't happen - sorry, I would still insist you need to find a way to provide your own bread (my be, without butter :))

We've been over this before. But, for the benefit of readers who weren't there at the time... As I said in in this post, when you started saying those things, I didn't actually believe them, because it didn't sound like the Mom I grew up with. After our conversation on November 9, I was more inclined to take you on the word... But even then, part of me will always wonder.

Nobody said unlearning what you learned during your formative years was easy, either.
