9th Grader Punished Under Russian "Homosexual Propaganda" Law

Feb 03, 2014 16:43

The article comes to us from Znak (the sign), a Russian online newspaper. Rather than try to summarize it, I'm going to translate the whole thing verbatim, just to give you a better feel of what sort of crap LGBT individuals in the Motherland have to deal with.

It Has Come to This. For the first time in Russia, a child (!) is punished for gay propaganda.
by Aleksey Novoselov

The first instance of penalizing a child for gay propaganda has been recorded in Russia. The ruling of a commission for juvenile affairs in one of the small city in Bryanski district (the exact municipality won't be disclosed to protect the child) made on January 16 of this year and obtained by Znak.com, indicates that, in November [of last year] during the course of some "preventative work," a 9th grade girl was revealed as "openly identifying herself as an individual of a non-standard sexual orientation.

Also, according to the commission statement, the girl "systematically spread information aimed at giving juveniles [it seems to be a reference to classmates - ed. note] twisted notion about the equal social value of traditional and non-traditional sexual relationships."

The reports also known that the girl wasn't abusing fellow juveniles ("she did not encroach upon the juveniles' sexual integrity"), so she didn't face any criminal charges. In the end, it was decided that she was to be let off with the warning, and have the girl registered with the commission on juvenile affairs.

The comments, btw, were a mixture of "this is what fascism looks like" and "those filthy homos are invading the Russian heartland," so it isn't completely hopeless.

For whatever that's worth.
