A thought...

So, Chlare accidentally nudged my brain in a Giles-ward direction, and I got to thinking. If some people are hesitant to ship Giles and Buffy because of the age difference (as opposed to something about their relationship as Slayer and Watcher*) then why isn't Buffy/Angel not squickiness squared? Or Buffy and Spike, for that matter ( Read more... )

I think - for me - that it's more of the Daddy figure issue. Age isn't a factor in most things.

We won't get into my Spuffy issues...

I would have to agree with the 'age isn't a factor' thing. (Heck, you know I'll happily ship Billy and Alan from Jurassic Park without a shadow of a qualm.) But although I'll read Giles/Buffy, I probably wouldn't write it... which was what got me wondering why that was. If it is just because of the nature of their relationship, then shipping Buffy/Ethan, say, would be less weird. And I can't quite decide if it is or isn't! Ha!

Aww. *pets your Spuffy issues*

I'm with Nora. Giles was her father figure and that squicks me. Same with the whole Winchest thing from Supernatural.

Y'know, until rightthissecond, I had been using Ethan as the comparative not-a-father-figure character of about the same age, which just doesn't work because he's Baddie McBlack-Hat and Buffy's not. But then I realized that I have no problem shipping House and Chase, where there's a fairly significant age difference... so I'm starting to think you guys are right. *G* Thanks fer weighing in on my nonsense!

Iiinteresting! See, this is exactly why I love livejournal. Seriously, who else could I bounce these questions off of? :-D I think you guys are definitely on to something here with an angle that I didn't really think of. (Anne-Rice-logic remains safe from my prodding... for now! *g*)

Hmmm. That is an interesting issue. But look at all the House/Cameron shippers. Granted, not as much of an age difference, but still it's there. I think it's more the fact that Giles is the father figure to all of the Scoobies. That is what would really stop me.

Funny enough, it was actually my stubborn insistence on shipping House and Chase that got me thinking along the same lines as you here! :-D I'm not sure why the paternal thing didn't twig with me as another alternative when I was pondering that. (And now I get to go 'Bwahahaha! I made you all think!' *g*)

House/Chase isn't stubborn insistence. The writers give just about EVERY ship ample air time. Even clinic guy/cows.

Well, I also think there's a wee smidge of age-of-body at play too. If you don't find Giles/House/whomever attractive, then they're going to be harder for a person to ship.

I myself have no qualms with Buffy/Giles just because they do have that close bond *ahem* and I don't have that much of a problem with the incest/father figure factor...anymore.

But I can't say that that isn't a very influential factor which all of you are smart to point out. :)

I would also tentatively point to an innocence factor as well. Chase is obviously not innocent and old enough to make his own choices about who to be involved with whereas Buffy is always going to have this aura of young blonde innocence that might make it more difficult for some people to ship.

That being said, it might be partially a het thing as well, although, I think I might say that more due to the vulnerability of a character.

But anyway...I don't think that made any sense, but I thought I'd jump in anyway. :) 'Tis an interesting question.

Oh sure, making me all thinky again! I lurve some of these suggestions. My brain's in essay-mode, but this is much more fun to muse on!

If you don't find Giles/House/whomever attractive, then they're going to be harder for a person to ship. But is that actually about age, or just attractiveness? I probably wouldn't ship Warren with anyone... although god knows they give us enough ammunition for him and Andrew... because I just don't find the guy very pretty. And yet, minimal age difference ( ... )
