Right. You guys know I have a "thing" for the campy Disney teen movie Sky High, yes? Especially for our resident brooding, pyrokinetic hottie, Warren Peace? Right. Well, I'll be honest and say that SH fandom is small and, shall we say, overflowing with Mary Sue ficcage of the "I'm an emo goth, my life sucks, I have like a zillion powers, and oh, look at that hottie, he is mine, stat!" type. On the other hand, you do have a few well-thought-out fics with well-rounded characters who aren't caricatures of themselves.
Katharwen is such a writer. I just discovered her late last night. Or rather, I discovered her ongoing fic
What It Means To Be A Hero late last night, and, up until after I reviewed, I didn't know it was part of a series, so I'm going to backtrack a bit and read the first one,
With Enemies Like These, which I think I read a couple chapters of a few months ago. So here are the fics with their synopses, should it interest you :)
With Enemies Like These: Anna usually kept away from Warren Peace, since their fathers had that fierce battle all those years ago. But with her grade at stake, she's determined to get along, against her cousin's wishes. Her choice though, could cost her far more than an 'A'...
Do Not Go Gently: After the tragedy, Warren had reminded Anna that it wasn't easy being a Superhero. And with the new changes, challenges, and dangers she must now face, no one knows that better than she does. This is the second installment to 'With Enemies Like These'.
What It Means To Be A Hero: Anna and Warren have finally graduated from Sky High and are looking forward to saving the world as Heroes. But they'll soon realize that their dreams are easier said than done. This is the final installment of the 'With Enemies Like These' series.
Anna is not your garden-variety OC, and her character spins those last few seconds of the movie in a different direction: the girl Warren skips the homecoming dance with whom I always thought was Freeze Girl is in fact... another girl with lightburst-throwing powers.
"What It Means" is kind of taking the direction of a budding relationship (*crosses fingers!*) between best friends Warren and Anna, so I'm pretty sure the previous two are completely Gen, and from what I can understand it's more action than romance overall. There's a (minor-ish?) character death, too, and Anna is physically scarred at some point.
